But what about the rest? How do they study?
Majority of the people will start to study just 2-3 days before the exam. How will they study? Simple, just run thru the theory and solve the qns at the back. The focus is just on solving the qns,rather than actually understanding the theory. Solving is often done in groups. Now in the paper, the same kind of qns come and ppl, because they have solved it once ,have no probs solving again.But lets say a conceptual qn or a totally different kind of qn comes?Ppl get bombed and only the ones with true interest survive .After the exam, mostly no one remembers anything. IITians do that too, only thing is that they have to attend classes .But most of them are sleepy/not interested and would rather not be in the class. So it amounts to not attending at all.
The qn u?d be asking is ?Why the hell would companies want to pay huge salaries to such useless ppl who don?t even study their course properly?? Question
Becuz the students in the top engg colleges are the best in the country in terms of how hard they are ready to work, in order to achieve their goals. They are hard-working and can handle a lot of stress ,BUT, only when they are working towards their goal. But then why don?t they study well? Becuz that goal doesn?t interest (most of)them until the last day. Come to our hostels and ppl will be studying till 3 in the morning and the exam wud be at 10 that morning. They?d probably have started the syllabus(worth 1.5 months of studies) less than 16hrs ago but strangely would have completed most of it .This exercise generates huge amounts of stress but ppl still push thru. By the way this is most undesirable. Mad Also those interested in the course will have been working hard throughout the semester. So basically you?ve got a set of hard-working ppl who?ll work really hard only if they are interested. And fat pay packages interests each one of us. Most of companies are after our analytical skills which we possess (and also develop) coupled with the fact that we are extremely hardworking wrt. what interests us.
Also course stru in the top colleges and ?others? is pretty much the same. Profs are perceived to be equally bad and ineffective in both places. But what differentiates, is all the extra co curricular activities which go a long way in personality development .The kind of exposure you get in terms of Guest Lectures,workshops,Tech Fests ,Cul Fests, etc is a lot.The Alumni also contribute by holding the insti flag when they reach their summits of success.(Does BITS have its own Flag??I know we have our own Anthem!!!)

great piece of work...it shows that u have put a great amount of work to write this article...it is really beneficial....i gave the jee this year ...no expectations ...planning to take admission in some NiT like Warangal,Surathkal or Rourkela(my hometown) or BITS(if i get thru it)...i never knew so much about Engg. colleges and college life....hats off to you
helo bhaiya this post by u is great and speaking truth i was personally having all those myths u mentioned but now everything is cleared. u cannot avoid these myths because their r many frnds who give wrong views.

HEY u guys are from BITS so u ll talk about BITS .YEah I admit that BITS is a big brand but it would take years for it to get the rep at par woth the IITs.I was earlier in BITS,then i gave JEE again went to IITR ECE and yeah I can see IIT is definitely much better in all aspects as compared to BITS,Keep the rankings apart.YEah after IIT if any college comes to my mind is BITS.Though it my take over IIT in terms of placement some day but IIT will definitely remaina bigger brand than BITS.I donot say that IIT is heaven.Every college is more or less eqaul for me.WHat is to be learnt is the true spirit of engineering.IITs enjoy an edge over the other colleges and thats not due to their infrabut also the eaxam through which a student gets into the IIt.You have to admit that any chld prepares for IIT and NOT for BITS or other exam.EVen u urself wud have done it.SO it is pointless to compare IIT with any other technical institution in the country.
ya its tru dear,d real hardwork v do is in the schools days,once v r out of it,then books just become a show piece for us..here v r focussing more on the practical applications on vat v r studying and less on theory papers,therory papers r just to be studied to get through the sem xamz...tat's it

@aditya : IIT might be better than bits in terms of infrastructure......but u should also remember that IITs get huge amounts of govt. funding......Whereas BITS is a private institute....pepul go for IIT-JEE only because they r more aware about it......now a days, even if u go 2 some small remote rural area ,they will know about IIT-JEE but not BITSAT.....you have to accept the fact that 90% of pepul giving IIT-JEE are not serious and are just giving it for a chance....i have experienced it during my JEE test....some pepul coming out had attempted all problems......when asked why...they replied....."i have paid 1000 rupees for this".......by this u can estimate their attempts.......
even in my city, which is not a very big one....pepul of all intellect levels chant the name of IIT-JEE after clearing 10th boards......and not surprisingly, most of them are now in arts/commerce stream.....
* it all depends on branch of interest....go with it ......irrespective of which coll. u r, u will succeed..........
Hmm...well it was informative. thanx. mostly i wont b goin to BITS even if i get there cuz i live in Mumbai and want a college .I always wanted IIT-B. but my IItjee score aint that high to get the cousre of my choice in mumbai iit. yet if i do change my mind nd evr decide to go to BITS-Pilani , ur article wud have played a majr role in my decision. thank u a an excellent article.
i am a recent BITS pass out ... a fresh grad like u with a call from IIM B...the last 5 pages that i read were exactly wat i ve learntand experienced in the last 6 years...so hats off to u for such a precise description...i myself keep telling the freshers the same things...but u have put it beautifully...it will definitely help freshers take the right decision

i ve got a problem in deciding whether i shud take up a 5 years course in pilani or a four years course in goa.(i plan to do mba after engg. and don hv a prob with fields lvin civil and biotech).in which case are the placements better?(evn thoh i want 2 do mba after grad..i m just askin which degree holds a greater value)and i ve heard dat d 5 yrs courses hv to choose their engg. course after one yr(could u throw sum lite on d topic?).my marks say dat i mite get msc in chem ,finance,info systems or engg. tech.which of the lot is d best?

sir may ur highness allow me to express my views.throughout ur suggestions rather discussions u have preferred IITs thats good but u have let down NITs to little bit extent particylarly with respect to that of BITs.i dont know why??? u urself argued that a college's status can well b judged by its students' post btech studies.in that case especially NIT trichy warangal suratkal r one of the most leading ones with many students from these marvelous institutes being 100 percentilers in a year or two. most of them prefer foreign universities to pursue MS and MBA.they r not at all inferior to lower IITs or BITs.above all approx. 200 companies recruited students of NIT trichy offering bumper packages. thats not a joke. NITs in upcoming years will be full in their flow bcoz they r in existence from 2002 only!!!!!!!!!!!!!
great article man. im a 12th std student and am really confused as to what ill do after 12th. currently im preparing for iit but i need as much exposure as i can get, and this article has provided exactly that. it has actually cleared many of my doubts about college and college life.
although i knew that bits was a reputed college i always doubted as to how gud it was, the facts provided in this article are real gud.

I just wrote jee 3 days back and i had messed it up totally !!!
