What is a SPLIT AIR CONDITIONER - How does a SPLIT AC work

Air Conditioners are commonly used during summers especially with the temperatures going up. One must just not walk into a consumer appliances store and buy an appliance just by taking the sellers word.

If you do a basic research on Air Conditioners you will find out that there are different types of air conditioners which work on different principles. Unlike what many people think Air Conditioners not only blow old air into the room, they also take out the Hot air.

Split AC is a type of Air Conditioner in which the Hot Air Section is separated from the Cold Air section. The cold section blows the Air into the Coil consisting of coolants and this air passes through a series of Ducts and enters the House.

The Hot air is  taken out and sent to the condensing unit. Ideally the hot air condensing unit lies outside the house while the Cold Air Handling Section is part of the Air Conditioner

Why Use a Split AC

Since the HOT and COLD sections are separated it results in more efficient cooling at lower energy consumptions. Since the Hot Air Condesing System lies out of the house ( generally on roof tops) it reduces the noise inside the house considerably. But this approach has also some disadavanatages. The noise outside increases as the hot air is being pumped out. Also for very large buildings SPLIT AC's take considerable effort in installing as you need to use very long pipes to connect both the sections.

SPLIT AC REVIEWS , SPLIT AC RATINGS

There are many companies which offer SPLIT AC in the market. What one must check is it;s energy consumption and also it's capacity. In some countries they give ratings for the energy efficient products. So do not forget to check for the SPLIT AC RATINGS and always go for the top rated product.

Generally consumer appliance companies like LG and SAMSUNG do not fare well before the refrigeation experts like BLUESTAR,CARRIER and DAIKIN. Among LG and SAMSUNG, it has been proven to choose LG Air Conditioners over Samsung. Considering your Budget and other factors you must decide on which split ac you are going to buy. Also check how good their customer service is as most air conditioners are bound to go for service maintenance every now and then.

You can look at the following response which are summarized from various discussions and forums

  1. If you have no restrictions on the amount of money you spend then prefer Hitachi, BlueStar,Toshiba & carrier
  2.  If you have a restriction on your budger then go for LG. LG provides the best service when compared to other competitors.
  3.   Do no go for Samsung & Onida; You will find more complaints than good reviews everywhere
  4.  If the size of your room is less than 100 square feet, then you can look at AC’s below 1 ton capacity, i.e. 0.8 or 0.9 ton    If room size is above 100 & below 140 square ft then go for 1 ton.
  5. Htiachi, Bluestar, Voltas, LG, Samsung,ONIDA, Videocon are good in that order
  6. The encapsulation of the Compressor makes a difference , especially when you leave it without a shade in the open. LG Split AC's come with a  better one compared to Samsung.
  7. Star ratings do matter.
